The Education System Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1750 words

The Education System - Essay Example What measures are we willing to take in order to achieve it What system are we going to introduce to our education so that we could produce individuals fit for this society Are we willing to sacrifice and violate some values such as the values of privacy and freedom just to attain this so called "perfect society" And if we do, will it be worth it What would have become of us as human beings Education is one way to implement discipline or a desired behavior of any sort. After all, it is undeniable that a nation's education system greatly influences the kind of citizens it has. The people's discipline, values, and way of living are all affected by the kind of education they were able to attain, since we all know that, before being exposed to the real world where we have to work, we have to go through education. Unless we are home schooled and aside from outside influences, we learn everything else in school: manners, culture, academics. If the education system of a society can be altered and controlled by one person, there is a great chance that he will gain control over all of the society. In Paulo Freire's "banking theory of education" from his book Pedagogy of the Oppressed, he argues that society uses education to avoid people from intervening in what they have created as the perfect society. They have come up with a system that does not allow students to think; rather they are only receptacles of teachings or deposits. He said that "the banking concept of education regards men as adaptable, manageable beings. The more students work at storing the deposits entrusted to them, the less they develop the critical consciousness which would result from their intervention in the world as transformers of that world". In this concept, students receive what the teachers give. They don't have a perception or an opinion of their own. They are only to record, memorize, and repeat without thinking. (Freire, Chapter 2). This way, it will be sure that no one stands up to change anything in the system. "The more completely they accept the passive role imposed on them, the more they tend simply to adapt to the world as it is and to the fragmented view of reality deposited in them". Thus his idea of the students being the "oppressed" and the education system being oppressive because the system has removed the students' ability to think creatively and at the same time, be contributors to the learning process so they don't only listen. Michael Foucault's concept of Panopticism, on the other hand, introduces a mechanism that involves instruments, techniques, and procedures to be able to suppress and control people's minds to make sure that discipline "reigns over society as a whole" (Foucault, Part 3: Discipline). Although this is a completely separate idea, the concept of gaining power and control is the same with Freire's "banking concept". In Foucault's book Discipline and Punish, Part Three, he compares panopticism with a plague affected town. The plague can be an illness, or a symbolic disorder of rebellions, crimes, and vagabondage. In order to contain this plague and avoid any "contagions", a system was built to supervise each and every citizen in all their movements. The town was closed and they were prohibited to leave town in pain of death. All events were under surveillance and everything was recorded. From this concept, Foucault discusses a style of architecture from Jeremy Bentham's idea wherein

The Importance of Religion to American Slaves Essay -- Exploratory Ess

The Importance of Religion to American Slaves Whether one notices or not, each person has the right to make choices concerning his or her life. Being able to make these decisions is a God-given right that vibrates in the heart of every human being who claims possession and mastery over his or her own self. However, for slaves, this concept did not exist, and they became the property of someone else with no place to call their own. For this reason, many slaves turned to religion to comfort them in their darkest hour, to help them gain the strength to continue in their struggles, and to hope that a day would come when they would rise above their condition to a better place. For slave-owners, the Bible became a place where the institution of slavery was justified, but for the slaves, Christianity became a symbol of redemption in which they envisioned a future free from bondage, and if earthly escape was not possible, their faith would be rewarded in the afterlife, securing them a home of their own in a free heaven. While many white slave owners discouraged slaves from learning the Bible for fear it would encourage slaves to seek freedom, slaves, nevertheless, felt the Bible was their source for obtaining earthly freedom; thus "their persistent hope for the future was tied to their faith in God." (Stammering Tongue, 57). Their convictions gave them the ounce of hope they needed to believe that there was a better life awaiting them. Civil War Essays -- essays research papers

After the Civil War ended in 1865, the south was in total ruins. Houses were destroyed, crops were gone, and lives would never be the same again. It wouldn’t be until years after the war that people would get their lives back on track. Whites in the south now hated the blacks and still think they are inferior.   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  The process of rebuilding that followed the American Civil War was known as reconstruction. The war left a set of pressing questions concerning with what to do with the South. These questions involved the relationship with the former Confederate states and the Union; the type of punishment that should be imposed on the ones responsible for the rebellion; the status of the freed slaves and how to restore the South’s economy. President Lincoln, President Johnson and the Radical Republicans each had their own plans.   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Lincoln started thinking about reconstruction as early as 1863. He wanted for 10 percent of the voters in each southern state to take an oath of loyalty to the United States. After this the state could form its own government. The government had to abolish slavery. After this was done the government could elect congressmen and participate in national politics. His plan was known to be lenient; many had opposed it.   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Unfortunately President Lincoln did not live to carry out all of his plans. A Democrat was elected into office and took over. The new president was Andrew John...

American Expansion in the 1940s

American westward expansion started in the 1820s and peaked by 1845. After the defeat of Napoleon’s armies on American and European lands, the minds of many Americans got concentrated on exploring own continent. This notion of expansion was greatly supported by the government and American presidents James Monroe and Andrew Jackson. Therefore, a number of new states were admitted to the country within those decades. Another reason encouraging American people to go west was the land boom which started after Louisiana Purchase. After acquisition of huge territories, farmers received an opportunity to settle down along the Mississippi River and start their new businesses there. Together with the rise of the country’s banking system, this expansion substantially contributed to the development of economy and commerce in those times. In addition, in the 1830s President Jackson initiated a campaign directed on driving out American Indian tribes (including Cherokee Native America ns) living in Ohio Valley and on the territories around modern Georgia, Tennessee and Alabama to less fertile and attractive lands to the West of the Mississippi. As a result of this governmental operation thousands of the Natives died in resistance fights or from hunger and diseases at their new place of settlement. This historical action is known as the Trail of Tears. Therefore, the above mentioned factors formed the background for continuing the expansion in the 1840s which was mainly about exploring the territories along the Pacific coast and far west. First of all, in 1845 Texas was annexed to the Union as a result of so called Texas Rebellion. This was one more successful operation directed on gaining independence of Texas territories from Mexican domination followed by admission of Texas as a part of American Union. The reaction of Mexican government on these territorial pretensions of America was furious and in 1846 the Mexican War was initiated. The battles raged throughout New Mexico, California and Texas, but Mexican armies proved to be considerably weaker than American powers were, that’s why in 1848 President James K.Polk celebrated his easy but glorious victory of new lands, including the parts of Colorado, Wyoming, Arizona, as well as Utah, Nevada, California and New Mexico. Furthermore, in 1846 the Union gained the territories of modern Oregon as a result of successful negotiations with the Great Britain which had those lands under control. This way the United States could dominate throughout the continent from the Atlantic seashore to the Pacific Coast. Therefore, within the period of 5 years the territories of the Union were increased almost by a third. In order to justify and legalize its territorial acquisitions, American government issued a doctrine called Manifest Destiny. It stated that American nation was destined to expand and explore the lands to the west. Manifest Destiny was supposed to proclaim the main ideology of those times which was supporting and promoting the idea of expansion. Finally, in the beginning of 1948 gold was discovered in California. This discovery caused famous Gold Rush, during which thousands of gold hunters and â€Å"forty-niners† stampeded to newly discovered gold fields in far west looking for big money and a new wealthy life.Historical period between 1835 and 1850 can be called the epoch of exploration and settlement. This huge territorial enlargement of the Union deepened the conflict and differences between South and North of the country, as well as it brought up the fateful question about allowing slavery in the western regions. Margaret Preston history essays

Margaret Preston history essays In a period of time where many of Australias artists were woman, a time confused with wars that had been and wars that were to come, a time when art was pure and true one particular female artist rose above the rest, and her name was Margaret Preston. Born in Adelaide in early 1875 she lived a long eighty eight years, and in those years provided some of the greatest and most unique art Australia had ever seen. She moved around a lot in her childhood, jumping from city to city along the eastern coast but at the fairly young age of nineteen was suddenly brought back to the city of her birth to be by her sailor father as illness lead to his death in 1894. It was back in Adelaide where she took up her major art training at the Adelaide school of design, and also landed her first job as a teacher. She very much enjoyed this job, as it had nothing much to do with her personal art. The reason this was good for her is because she strived to create her art strictly for pleasure rather than profit, something she well achieved. Of course, if it wasnt money she was getting she would gladly accept praise, and to see just how well her works where doing in the world she planned a trip to England and Europe in 1904 and stayed a three years that were anything but short to her. She hated the art in Europe, and the feeling was mutual: over there her art wasnt quite as impressive as shed hoped, to put it kindly. The people were admiring paintings that she thought terrible, and that was on a good day. Soon after this unpleasant experience she turned to the learning of Japanese art at the Musee Guimet and came to happily accept that there is more than one vision in art. After coming to this acceptance she took quite a liking to a very decorative style as used by the Ile de Noirmouter artist, Norman Carter. She finally tied the knot with George Preston (her maiden name being McPherson) in Australia ...

How to Write a 5-Paragraph Essay on American Culture

How to Write a 5-Paragraph Essay on American Culture A five paragraph essay is a standard essay which, once learned, serves as the foundation for all other forms of writing. This format is important to learn because it will help to structure nearly all academic writing assignments going forward. To begin a five paragraph essay, you need a topic. In some cases, your teacher will give you one, in others they may allow you some leeway in the selection of your topic. With the topic in hand, you need to formulate a thesis statement. The thesis functions as a single statement which presents the purpose of your paper. It should be the first or last sentence in your introductory paragraph which is where you will introduce the points you are going to make in support of your thesis. There are three body paragraphs inside of which you can present three key components to support your thesis. If, for example, you are claiming that American culture has changes a lot, you must present three key findings each in a separate paragraph to support that idea. You might explain it on the example of music in the first paragraph, art in the second paragraph, and cinematography the third paragraph. The conclusion is the fifth and final paragraph where you remind the reader of the three points you ma de and what evidence you had to back them up. The structure for all 5 paragraph essays is as follows: Introduction. This is where you introduce your topic, where you provide your reader with an idea of how your essay will be organized and what three points you will be making to support your claim. First body paragraph. This should encompass one of your three points with evidence. This evidence can come in the form of data, statistics, quotes from experts, logic, or reason, from reputable sources. Second body paragraph. The same details for the first body paragraph are true here, such that you need to support your claim with evidence. Third body paragraph. Again, the same details for the first body paragraph are true here, insofar as you must support your claims with evidence. The last paragraph. This is where you remind the reader of your claim and what three points you brought up in your body paragraphs. These are general guidelines that will be greatly helpful in producing an academic paper. But if you want to make your assignment even worthier, then read our facts on American culture or use the topics that are prepared beforehand.
